Letter match
Say: "Find the g pictures and the c pictures." Your learner colors the pictures that start with g in one color and the pictures that start with c in another.
Ten frame count
Say: "Count the dots in each frame. What number is it?" Your learner counts the dots in each ten frame and says the number. Write it under the frame for them to trace.
Which tool?
Say: "Which tool do we use to eat soup? To open a door? To clean the table?" Your learner points to the tool for each job you name, then colors the pictures.
All the lines
Say: "Straight, wavy, zigzag. Start at the green dot." Your learner traces a straight line, a wavy line and a zigzag line, holding the crayon with fingers and thumb.
Activity cards
Letter hop
- Put the 3 sheets on the floor.
- Say a sound or a letter name.
- Your learner hops onto the matching sheet.
Easier: Use 2 sheets.
Next step: Say the sounds of a short word, like c, o, t. Your learner says the word.
Say this: "Hop to the letter that says g."
No supplies: Point to the letter in the air instead of hopping.
Literacy: print and alphabet knowledge
Toy store to 10
- Line up the toys as a pretend store.
- Ask to buy a number of toys, from 1 to 10.
- Your learner counts them out to you.
Easier: Ask for up to 6.
Next step: Ask "How many are left in the store?"
Say this: "May I have 8 toys, please?"
No supplies: Use spoons or socks as the store.
Math: counting and cardinality
Who helps?
- Give a clue about a helper: "I help when there is a fire."
- Your learner guesses the helper.
- Take turns giving clues.
Easier: Use teacher and firefighter.
Next step: Your learner tells what they would say to thank that helper.
Say this: "I help you find books. Who am I?"
No supplies: Needs nothing.
Social-emotional: relationships with others
Freeze and count
- Sing a song from this unit while you both dance.
- Stop singing and call out a number from 1 to 10.
- Everyone freezes, then claps that many times.
Easier: Use numbers up to 5.
Next step: Freeze on one foot while you clap.
Say this: "Freeze. Clap 7 times."
No supplies: Needs nothing but space.
Approaches to learning: self-regulation
Song of the week: Home and helpers
G and o and c I know,
Count to ten and off we go.
Tools at home and helpers too,
Thank you, thank you, I thank you.
Actions: Hold up one finger for each number you count. Try next: Count from 10 back down to 1.
Parent notes for Friday
Not a test. Notice what your learner does this week, and practice the rest later. Nothing here is sent to UpOnly Learning.
- Matches g and c words to their letter
- Says the short o sound

Want the bigger picture? Use the free kindergarten readiness checklist.
Safety for this week
- Use objects too big to fit in your learner's mouth, and stay close during any counting with real objects.
- Child-size scissors only, with an adult watching. Hand scissors over handle first.
- Choose crayons, markers and paint labeled for young learners (look for the AP seal).
- Adults handle anything hot or sharp.
Questions parents ask
By the end of this unit many students can say the g, o and c sounds, count 10 objects and say how many, and read some numbers from 6 to 10. They can also name a few tools and helpers. Use the parent notes page to choose what to practice next.
That is common at this age. Count together slowly, touching each object, and say the number line in songs and on stairs. Practice the tricky part, often 7 to 10, a few times a day. Counting real things matters more than saying the numbers fast.
Repeat any week as many times as you like. There is no test and no deadline. Use the parent notes page to pick one or two things to practice, and move on when your student seems comfortable. Unit 5 brings animals, sorting and patterns.
Paper, crayons, 10 toys that are too big to fit in the mouth, and a spoon, a key and a sponge for the tool game. Every activity also has a no-supplies swap, so you can start this review week with what you already have at home.
