Letter match

Say: "Find the r pictures, the h pictures and the b pictures." Your learner says each picture's name and first sound, then colors r pictures in one color, h pictures in another and b pictures in a third.

No supplies swap. No printer? Say a word and your learner says "r", "h" or "b".

Count the garden

Say: "Count each row and color the dots." Your learner counts each group and colors the same number of dots.

No supplies swap. No printer? Count leaves, sticks or spoons into a cup, up to 5.

Big, bigger, tall

Say: "Which tree is taller? Which pencil is longer?" Your learner colors the taller tree and the longer pencil, then tells you about the other two.

No supplies swap. No printer? Line up three toys and ask which one is the tallest.

All the lines

Say: "Straight, wavy, zigzag. Start at the green dot." Your learner traces a straight line, a wavy line and a zigzag line.

No supplies swap. No printer? Make the three lines with string or a finger in flour.

Activity cards

Letter garden

10 minutes · You need: 3 sheets of paper with r, h and b

  1. Put the 3 sheets on the floor like garden beds.
  2. Say a sound or a letter name.
  3. Your learner hops onto the matching sheet.

Easier: Use 2 sheets.

Next step: Say a word; your learner hops to its first letter.

Say this: "Hop to the letter that says h."

No supplies: Point to the letter in the air instead of hopping.

Literacy: print and alphabet knowledge

Line them up

10 minutes · You need: 5 things of different sizes, like a spoon, a cup, a shoe, a book and a toy

  1. Your learner picks two things and tells which is taller or longer.
  2. Then pick up two things and tell which is heavier.
  3. Try to line all 5 up from shortest to tallest.

Easier: Compare just two things at a time.

Next step: Ask "Which is the heaviest of all?"

Say this: "The shoe is longer. The book is heavier."

No supplies: Compare family members: who is tallest, who has the longest hair.

Math: measurement

How did it grow?

5 minutes · You need: The bean in a cup

  1. Look at the bean together.
  2. Your learner tells what changed since the first day.
  3. Ask "What does a plant need to grow?" Water, light and time.

Easier: Point to the roots and the leaves.

Next step: Ask "What will happen next week?"

Say this: "First it was a seed. Now it has roots."

No supplies: Look at a tree or a plant outside and talk about how it grew.

Science: seeds and growing

Plant freeze dance

5 minutes · You need: Space to move

  1. Sing a song from this unit while you both dance.
  2. Stop singing: everyone freezes like a tall plant.
  3. Start singing again and dance.

Easier: Dance slowly.

Next step: Freeze like a tiny seed, then like a tall tree.

Say this: "Freeze like a tree. Hold it. Now dance."

No supplies: Needs nothing but space.

Approaches to learning: self-regulation

Song of the week: Garden show me

Show me r and show me h,

Show me b, it's not too late.

Taller, longer, heavy, light,

Seeds grow up with all their might.

Actions: Reach up high on "taller" and stretch your arms wide on "longer". Try next: Sing it in a whisper, then in a big voice.

Parent notes for Friday

Not a test. Notice what your learner does this week, and practice the rest later. Nothing here is sent to UpOnly Learning.

  • Says the sound for r, h and b
  • Matches pictures to their first letter
  • Compares two things: taller, longer or heavier
  • Tells what a seed needs to grow

Want the bigger picture? Use the free kindergarten readiness checklist.

Safety for this week

  • Use objects too big to fit in your learner's mouth, and stay close during any counting with real objects.
  • Child-size scissors only, with an adult watching. Hand scissors over handle first.
  • Choose crayons, markers and paint labeled for young learners (look for the AP seal).
  • Adults handle anything hot or sharp.

Questions parents ask

What does a pre-k review week look like?

Week 4 of every unit has no new letter. Your student plays short games that bring back the unit's letters, math and science. It is a calm week, and a good time to notice what your student knows well and what needs a little more practice.

How do I know if my child is learning?

Watch for what your student does in play, not just on paper. Do they use words like taller and heavier? Do they hear r, h and b at the start of words? Tick what you see on the parent notes page and repeat the rest.

What if our bean never grew?

Plant a new one this week, or look for sprouts on an old potato or onion in the kitchen. The goal is to see that seeds and plants change over time. Your student can still draw and talk about what a growing plant needs.

What supplies do I need for week 24?

Paper, crayons and 5 household things of different sizes that are too big to fit in the mouth, plus the bean in a cup if you have it. Every activity card also has a no-supplies swap, so you can start with what you already have at home.
