Letter match
Say: "Find the f pictures, the l pictures and the j pictures." Your learner says each picture's name and first sound, then colors f pictures in one color, l pictures in another and j pictures in a third.
Count the sky
Say: "Count each row and color the dots." Your learner counts each group and colors the same number of dots.
All the lines
Say: "Straight, wavy, zigzag. Start at the green dot." Your learner traces a straight line, a wavy line and a zigzag line.
My weather picture
Say: "Draw a sky. Put a sun above a house, and a cloud beside the sun." Your learner draws in the frame while you give one position direction at a time.
Activity cards
Letter jump
- Put the 3 sheets on the floor.
- Say a sound or a letter name.
- Your learner jumps onto the matching sheet.
Easier: Use 2 sheets.
Next step: Say a word; your learner jumps to its first letter.
Say this: "Jump to the letter that says lll."
No supplies: Point to the letter in the air instead of jumping.
Literacy: print and alphabet knowledge
Where is the bear?
- Hide the toy above, below, beside or between things.
- Your learner finds it and says where it is.
- Swap: your learner hides it and tells you a clue.
Easier: Use above and below only.
Next step: Give a clue without pointing: "It is between the cups."
Say this: "The bear is beside the cup."
No supplies: Use your hands: one hand above, below or beside the other.
Math: spatial sense
Dress for the weather
- Look out the window and name the weather.
- Your learner picks what to wear for it.
- Pretend it changes: "Now it is raining." What do they need now?
Easier: Pick one thing for sunny and one for rainy.
Next step: Your learner zips or buttons the jacket.
Say this: "It is cold and windy. What will you wear?"
No supplies: Point to clothes in a closet or a book instead.
Social-emotional: getting ready for different weather
Weather moves
- Say a weather word and move: sun, stretch tall; wind, sway; rain, wiggle fingers down.
- Say "storm" and stomp.
- Say "night" and lie down quietly.
Easier: Use sun and rain only.
Next step: Your learner calls the weather and you move.
Say this: "Wind. Sway, sway. Now night."
No supplies: Needs nothing but space.
Physical: gross motor
Song of the week: Where is it?
Above my head and below my feet,
Beside my friend, a seat to keep.
Between two hands, I clap it in,
F, l, j, let's start again.
Actions: Point above, below and beside, then clap between your hands. Try next: Your learner calls a place word and you point to it.
Parent notes for Friday
Not a test. Notice what your learner does this week, and practice the rest later. Nothing here is sent to UpOnly Learning.
- Says the sound for f, l and j
- Matches pictures to their first letter
- Uses 3 or more position words
- Picks clothes for the weather
Want the bigger picture? Use the free kindergarten readiness checklist.
Safety for this week
- Use objects too big to fit in your learner's mouth, and stay close during any counting with real objects.
- Child-size scissors only, with an adult watching. Hand scissors over handle first.
- Choose crayons, markers and paint labeled for young learners (look for the AP seal).
- Adults handle anything hot or sharp.
Questions parents ask
Use quick games, not drills. Put the letters on the floor and jump to them, play "I spy" with first sounds, and look for the letters in books. Five minutes a day is enough. Notice which letters your student knows well and which to repeat.
Look out the window each morning and ask what to wear. Let your student pick, then talk about it: "Will you be warm enough?" Practicing zips and buttons now also helps with getting ready on their own for kindergarten, and it builds the small hand muscles used for writing.
That is common. Between needs two things, one on each side. Show it with your student's body: stand between two chairs, then beside one chair. Hearing and feeling the difference often helps more than pictures. Then hide a toy between two cups and ask your student to find it.
Paper, crayons, a soft toy, 2 cups, a jacket, a hat and shoes. Every activity card also has a no-supplies swap, so you can start with what you already have at home. Print in black and white to save ink.
