Letter match
Say: "Find the t pictures and the p pictures." Your learner colors the pictures that start with t in one color and the pictures that start with p in another.
Count and match
Say: "Count each group and color the dots." Your learner counts each group and colors the same number of dots.
All the lines
Say: "Straight, wavy, zigzag. Start at the green dot." Your learner traces a straight line, a wavy line and a zigzag line.
Draw a feeling
Say: "Draw a face. Is it happy, sad, mad or scared?" Your learner draws a face in the frame and tells you the feeling. Talk about the eyes and the mouth together.
Activity cards
Letter hop
- Put the 3 sheets on the floor.
- Say a sound or a letter name.
- Your learner hops onto the matching sheet.
Easier: Use 2 sheets.
Next step: Say a word; your learner hops to its first letter.
Say this: "Hop to the letter that says p."
No supplies: Point to the letter in the air instead of hopping.
Literacy: print and alphabet knowledge
More or fewer store
- Line up the toys as a pretend store.
- Ask for a number of toys, from 0 to 5.
- Your learner counts them out, then asks for some back. Who has more?
Easier: Ask for up to 3.
Next step: Ask for the same number as you have.
Say this: "I have 2. You have 4. Who has more?"
No supplies: Use spoons or socks as the store.
Math: comparing groups
Feelings charades
- Make a face and a body shape for a feeling.
- Your learner guesses: happy, sad, mad or scared.
- Take turns being the actor.
Easier: Use happy and sad.
Next step: Add calm and surprised.
Say this: "My shoulders are down and my mouth goes down. How do I feel?"
No supplies: Needs nothing.
Social-emotional: emotional functioning
Freeze and feel
- Sing a song from this unit while you both dance.
- Stop singing and call out a feeling.
- Everyone freezes with that feeling face.
Easier: Use happy faces only.
Next step: Freeze on one foot with the face.
Say this: "Freeze with a scared face. Now a calm face."
No supplies: Needs nothing but space.
Approaches to learning: self-regulation
Song of the week: Friends and feelings
T and p and i, I know,
Zero to five, I count them so.
Happy, sad, mad, scared and calm,
I take a breath and clap my palms.
Actions: Make each feeling face as you sing its name. Try next: Count backward from 5 to 0.
Parent notes for Friday
Not a test. Notice what your learner does this week, and practice the rest later. Nothing here is sent to UpOnly Learning.
- Matches t and p words to their letter
- Says the short i sound
- Counts to 5 and tells more or fewer
- Names a feeling on a face
Want the bigger picture? Use the free kindergarten readiness checklist.
Safety for this week
- Use objects too big to fit in your learner's mouth, and stay close during any counting with real objects.
- Child-size scissors only, with an adult watching. Hand scissors over handle first.
- Choose crayons, markers and paint labeled for young learners (look for the AP seal).
- Adults handle anything hot or sharp.
Questions parents ask
By the end of this unit many students can say the t, p and short i sounds, match numbers 0 to 5 to groups and tell which group has more. They can also name a few feelings. Every student grows at their own pace, so use the parent notes page, not a test.
Games that move and talk work best: hopping onto letters, a pretend store with toys and feelings charades. Keep each one to about 10 minutes and stop while your student is still having fun. Repeating a favorite game is fine; it is still good practice.
Repeat any week as many times as you like. There is no test and no deadline. Use the parent notes page to pick one or two things to practice, and move on when your student seems comfortable. Unit 3 brings back counting while adding shapes.
Paper, crayons and 5 toys that are too big to fit in the mouth. Every activity also has a no-supplies swap, such as pointing to letters in the air instead of hopping, so you can start this review week with what you already have.
