Most parents who search for free worksheets want three things. They want the sheet to match the grade. They want an answer key, so checking takes two minutes instead of twenty. And they want it to be actually free, not free for the first page.

Today we opened a library that does all three: free practice sheets for every grade from kindergarten to grade 8, in every subject we teach, with the answers included.

Where can I find free printable worksheets with answer keys?

Start on the free worksheets page. Pick a grade and a subject, and you get a page of 50 questions with the answers marked.

Each sheet is built from our curriculum itself, not from a random question generator. A grade 3 math sheet covers what grade 3 actually covers: area and perimeter, fractions on a number line, rounding, telling time and multiplication as groups. A grade 7 history sheet covers what a grade 7 history course covers.

Printing needs a free account. No card.

What subjects and grades are covered?

Every grade from kindergarten to grade 8, in two groups.

Core subjects: math, reading, science, writing and history.

Real-World Skills: life skills, business and psychology. These are the skills most programs leave out: money, safety, cooking, teamwork, how the brain learns, how to handle a big feeling. We wrote more about them in Real-World Skills: life skills, business and psychology.

That is 50 questions per grade in each of the eight subjects.

Do worksheets actually help students learn?

A worksheet does not teach a new skill by itself. What it does well is make a student pull an answer out of memory, and that is one of the best-studied ways to make learning stick.

A large review of study methods rated practice testing (answering questions from memory) and spreading practice out over time as the two most useful techniques. Rereading and highlighting rated low (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Feedback matters too. A widely cited review found that feedback helps most when it tells the student where they are and what to do next (Hattie and Timperley, 2007). An answer key is the fastest way to give that feedback the same day.

So the useful habit is simple:

  1. A short sheet, a few times a week, not one long sheet once.
  2. Check it the same day with the answer key.
  3. Go back over the wrong ones together. That is where the learning is.

How do I print a clean copy and an answer key?

On every practice sheet there are two buttons.

There is a space for name, date and score at the top. If you also want quick number-fact drills, the practice sheet generator makes 100 addition, subtraction, multiplication or division questions at a time, with a separate answer key.

How many worksheets should a student do a day?

Less than most people think. For most students, 10 to 15 focused questions in one subject is a good daily dose, with more time for a skill they are still learning. Stop before frustration sets in.

If you want a fuller answer for math, we wrote about how much math practice a third grader needs.

Can I use these worksheets with a class, co-op or tutoring group?

Yes. The practice sheets are free to print and photocopy for the students you teach. Please do not post them online or sell them.

Teachers can read more in Printable worksheets for teachers and English learners. Co-ops can read Homeschool co-op and microschool curriculum.

Are the worksheets in Spanish and Portuguese?

Yes. Each sheet has the same questions in English, Spanish and Portuguese. That makes it easy to teach a topic in one language and practice it in the other. More on that in Bilingual homeschool in Spanish or Portuguese and English.

What is the difference between a worksheet and a workbook?

A practice sheet checks a skill. A workbook teaches it.

Each of our printable workbooks has a 40-minute lesson for every topic that tells you what to say, a worked example, the common mistakes and how to fix them, guided practice and an answer key that explains every answer.

A good pattern: use the free sheet to find what your student already knows, then teach the topics they missed from the workbook.

You can try any workbook before you buy it. The first topic of every workbook is free on the free workbooks page, answer key included.

What else can we try for free?

If your student seems behind, read My child is behind in reading or math before you print anything.

When you want more than practice
