Printable worksheets for teachers and English learners
Teachers do not need more worksheets. They need the right worksheet, for the right grade, with an answer key, ready before first period.
And in a lot of classrooms there is a second need: the student who arrived from Guatemala or São Paulo last month and is still learning English, but is ready for grade 4 math.
Today we opened a page for teachers built around both.
Where can teachers find free printable worksheets with answer keys?
On our free worksheets page. Pick a grade from kindergarten to grade 8 and a subject, and you get 50 questions with the answers.
The subjects are math, reading, science, writing and history, plus life skills, business and psychology. The questions are taken from our curriculum, so a grade 3 math sheet covers what grade 3 math covers.
To print a clean copy, click Hide answers. To print your key, click Show answers. Printing needs a free account, no card.
For warm-ups, the math drill generator makes 100 addition, subtraction, multiplication or division questions at a time, with a separate answer key and a fresh sheet whenever you ask.
Can I photocopy the worksheets for my class?
Yes. The practice sheets are free to print and photocopy for the students you teach. We only ask that you do not post them online or sell them.
Workbooks are different. They are licensed for one household. For a whole class, a group plan covers every lesson in every subject, and we agree the license with you in writing.
How can English learners work on the same skill as the class?
Every practice sheet has the same questions in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Here is one question from grade 3 math in all three:
- A rectangle on grid paper is 4 squares long and 2 squares wide. What is its area?
- Un rectángulo en papel cuadriculado mide 4 cuadrados de largo y 2 cuadrados de ancho. ¿Cuál es su área?
- Um retângulo no papel quadriculado tem 4 quadradinhos de comprimento e 2 de largura. Qual é a área dele?
Same skill, same answer, same day. The student is not doing a separate, easier activity while the class moves on.
This matters because many English learners already know the math or science. What they do not have yet is the English. About 10.6% of US public school students were English learners in fall 2021, and Spanish was the home language of about three in four of them (NCES).
Does using the home language slow down English?
The research says no. A national report found no evidence that using two languages confuses students or holds back either language (National Academies, 2017). Reading skills in the first language support reading in English (August and Shanahan, 2006).
A simple way to use the three versions:
- New concept: the student reads the question in their home language first.
- Same day: they answer the English version of the same question.
- Key words: circle the math or science words in both languages and keep a two-column word list.
- Send it home: a parent who reads Spanish or Portuguese can help with the same sheet.
How do I find a new student's level?
Use the free Foundation Assessment. It checks math, reading or English level, adapts as the student answers and shows where gaps start. "I don't know" is never counted wrong.
For students whose first language is Spanish or Portuguese, there is an English level check with the instructions in their language. Results show a level from 1 to 6, following the WIDA levels many US schools use. It is our estimate, not an official score, and it is a starting point, not a grade. For a student under 13, the results go to a parent's or guardian's email.
What else is free for teachers?
- Flashcards that read aloud in all three languages, ten free cards in every deck.
- Learning games for math, spelling, science and typing, with no ads.
- Free workbook samples, to see how a full lesson is taught.
