Letter match

Say: "Find the k pictures, the e pictures and the u picture." Your learner colors the k pictures in one color, the e pictures in another and the u picture in a third.

No supplies swap. No printer? Say a word and your learner says "k", "e" or "u".

Finish the pattern

Say: "Sun, moon, moon. Sun, moon, moon. What comes next?" Your learner says each pattern out loud, then draws or tells what goes in each box with a question mark.

No supplies swap. No printer? Make a pattern with spoons and cups and your learner adds the next one.

Animal homes

Say: "Where does each animal live? Draw a line to its home." Your learner draws a line from each animal in the top row to its home in the bottom row.

No supplies swap. No printer? Name an animal and your learner tells where it lives.

Draw an animal home

Say: "Draw an animal and its home. Who lives there?" Your learner draws an animal and where it lives in the frame, then tells you about it.

No supplies swap. No printer? Draw on any paper or with chalk outside.

Activity cards

Letter hop

10 minutes · You need: 3 sheets: K, E and U

  1. Put the 3 sheets on the floor.
  2. Say a sound or a letter name.
  3. Your learner hops onto the matching sheet.

Easier: Use 2 sheets.

Next step: Say the sounds of a short word, like p, e, t. Your learner says the word.

Say this: "Hop to the letter that says u."

No supplies: Point to the letter in the air instead of hopping.

Literacy: print and alphabet knowledge

Pattern train

10 minutes · You need: 6 spoons, 6 cups

  1. Make a pattern train on the table: spoon, cup, spoon, cup.
  2. Your learner adds the next car to the train.
  3. Try a new pattern: spoon, cup, cup.

Easier: Use an AB pattern only.

Next step: Your learner makes a pattern for you to finish.

Say this: "Spoon, cup, cup. Spoon, cup, cup. What's next?"

No supplies: Make a pattern with claps and pats.

Math: patterns

Animal sort

10 minutes · You need: Toy animals or animal pictures

  1. Spread out the animals.
  2. Your learner sorts them by where they live: farm, water, tree or ground.
  3. Sort them again a new way: big and small.

Easier: Sort into 2 groups: water and land.

Next step: Ask "Which group has the most?"

Say this: "The duck can go with water. Why?"

No supplies: Name animals and sort them by talking.

Science: where animals live

Animal parade

5 minutes · You need: Space to move

  1. Move like animals in a pattern: hop like a frog, stomp like an elephant.
  2. Keep the pattern going: hop, stomp, hop, stomp.
  3. Your learner leads a new animal pattern.

Easier: Do one animal at a time.

Next step: Try a three-step pattern: hop, stomp, stomp.

Say this: "Hop, stomp, hop, stomp. Who comes next?"

No supplies: Needs nothing but space.

Physical: gross motor

Song of the week: Animal homes

K and e and u I say,

Sort and pattern every day.

Fish in water, birds in trees,

Worms in the ground and gentle, please.

Actions: Swim, flap and wiggle as you name each animal. Try next: Add a line for a farm animal.

Parent notes for Friday

Not a test. Notice what your learner does this week, and practice the rest later. Nothing here is sent to UpOnly Learning.

  • Matches k, e and u words to their letter
  • Sorts things into groups and tells why
  • Finishes an AB or ABB pattern
  • Tells where 3 animals live

Want the bigger picture? Use the free kindergarten readiness checklist.

Safety for this week

  • Use objects too big to fit in your learner's mouth, and stay close during any counting with real objects.
  • Child-size scissors only, with an adult watching. Hand scissors over handle first.
  • Choose crayons, markers and paint labeled for young learners (look for the AP seal).
  • Adults handle anything hot or sharp.

Questions parents ask

What should my student know after unit 5?

By the end of this unit many students can say the k, e and u sounds, sort things into groups and say why, and continue an AB pattern. Many can also tell where a few animals live. Use the parent notes page to see what to practice next.

What is an ABB pattern?

An ABB pattern repeats one thing, then another thing twice: sun, moon, moon, sun, moon, moon. It is a step up from AB patterns. Say it out loud together, clap it, then build it with spoons and cups so your student can hear, move and see the pattern.

What if my student is not ready to move on?

Repeat any week as many times as you like. There is no test and no deadline. Use the parent notes page to pick one or two things to practice, and move on when your student seems comfortable. Unit 6 brings plants, food and measuring.

What supplies do I need for week 20?

Paper, crayons, toy animals or animal pictures, 6 spoons and 6 cups. Every activity also has a no-supplies swap, such as making patterns with claps and pats, so you can start this review week with what you already have at home.
