Magna Carta: No One Above the Law

Examine why Magna Carta was written in 1215, what it originally did, and how its ideas about law and rights influenced later governments. · 40 min

Warm-up — say this

“Should a leader follow the rules too? English nobles answered that question in 1215.”

Worked example

Why were the barons angry with King John?

Answer: He demanded heavy taxes and fees, seized land and punished people without fair trials, especially to fund failed wars in France.

A mistake students make

Magna Carta gave rights to all English people right away.

How the book fixes it

Explain that it mainly protected barons, the Church and free men; most peasants were serfs and received little direct benefit at first.

Note to the parent

Look up an image of a surviving 1215 copy online together; seeing the real parchment makes the event feel concrete.

That is one topic of many. The free questions above check a skill; this is the part that teaches it.
