Label Detective: Cracking the Snack Code
The student will read a Nutrition Facts label to find the serving size, servings per container and grams of sugar, read an ingredient list, and use this information to compare two snacks. · 40 min
“Food packages have a secret code on them. Today you are a label detective, and you will learn to crack it.”
A granola bar label says: Serving size 1 bar, Servings per container 6, Total Sugars 8 g. Ana eats 2 bars. How many grams of sugar does she get?
Answer: 16 grams. The label shows 8 g for one bar, so two bars is 8 + 8 = 16 g.
The numbers on the label are for the whole package.
Point to the serving size line. Show that the numbers are for one serving, and multiply by the number of servings for the whole package.
Keep the focus on curiosity and comparing, not on good or bad foods or on weight. Let the student choose between two snacks after reading the labels so they practice making the call.
