Hear Me, Hear You: Listening and Speaking Clearly
The student will use active listening skills (paying full attention, not interrupting, asking questions and paraphrasing) and speak clearly and respectfully with I-statements to say what they need. · 40 min
“Listening sounds easy, but really hearing someone takes skill. Let's see how many details we each caught.”
Your friend says, I'm nervous about the spelling bee because I always forget words when people are watching. Paraphrase what they said and ask a question.
Answer: So you get nervous and forget words when there is an audience. What do you think would help you feel calmer? The paraphrase shows you understood and the question shows you care.
Listening means just being quiet while the other person talks.
Explain that active listening also means paying attention, asking questions and checking that you understood by paraphrasing. Being quiet while thinking about what you want to say next is not really listening.
Children learn communication most by watching adults. When your student talks to you, model active listening: stop what you are doing, paraphrase and ask a question.
