Help Is Just Three Numbers Away

The student will tell an emergency from a smaller problem, practice what to say on a pretend emergency call, and name safe grown-ups to ask for help. · 40 min

Warm-up — say this

“Some helpers come super fast when we need them. Today you'll learn how to ask them for help.”

Worked example

Your little brother fell off the swing. He will not wake up and no grown-up is near. What should you do?

Answer: This is an emergency. Shout for a grown-up and, if no grown-up can help, call the emergency number and say your name, your address and what happened.

A mistake students make

You should hang up as soon as you say what is wrong.

How the book fixes it

Explain that the dispatcher needs to ask questions and may tell you what to do. Stay on the phone until the dispatcher says you can hang up.

Note to the parent

Practice only with a toy or turned-off phone, and show your student how to make an emergency call on your phone, including from the lock screen, without actually pressing call. Teach your student the emergency number for the country where you live (in the United States it is 911) and practice it together so they can say it from memory.

That is one topic of many. The free questions above check a skill; this is the part that teaches it.

Questions parents ask

Are these life skills worksheets really free?

Yes. All 50 questions and their answers are on this page, free to print and free to photocopy for your own students. Printing needs only a free account. No card.

Can a teacher or a tutor use these with a class?

Yes. Print and photocopy them for the students you teach. The only thing we ask is that you do not republish them as your own or sell them.

Where are the answers?

Marked beside each question on this page, so it prints as its own answer key. For a clean copy, click Hide answers before you print; click Show answers again to print your answer key.

What grade are these for?

Grade 1. Every other grade from kindergarten to grade 8 has its own page, linked at the foot of this one. If your student finds these hard, try the grade below — that is normal and it is not a problem.

What do the paid workbooks add?

These questions check a skill. The workbook teaches it: a forty-minute lesson that tells you what to say, two or three worked examples, the mistakes students actually make on that skill and how to correct each one, and an explanation beside every answer rather than a bare key.
