Clock and Calendar Detectives
The student will tell and write time to the nearest five minutes using a.m. and p.m., and use a calendar to find days, dates, weeks and months to plan ahead. · 40 min
“Clocks tell us WHEN in a day. Calendars tell us WHEN in a week, month and year. Let's become time detectives.”
The hour hand is just past the 3 and the minute hand points to the 9. What time is it?
Answer: 3:45. The hour hand is past 3, and counting by fives to the 9 gives 45 minutes.
The minute hand on the 4 means 4 minutes.
Each number is 5 minutes for the minute hand. Count by fives: 5, 10, 15, 20. So the 4 means 20 minutes.
Ask 'What time is it?' using an analog clock several times a day. Short, frequent practice works better than one long session.
