Chapter 1Home Harbor

Sam is the captain of the Aurora, a big ship with white sails and a gold star flag. Today the Aurora sets out to cross all five oceans.

Grandpa Teo hands Sam a captain's hat. "We are explorers," he says. "We look for wonders, not treasure."

Marina the navigator waves. "First, put your fingers on the home row," she says. "That is where they live, like the Aurora in her home harbor."

Out in the Atlantic, the Gulf Stream, a warm and fast ocean current, carries the ship northeast.

Gus rides on top of the mast and squawks with joy.

Chapter 2The Seaweed Sea

The Aurora sails into the Sargasso Sea, the only sea with no land boundary. Golden seaweed floats all around.

Sam climbs the rope ladder to look. "Reach up to the top row," says Marina, "then come back home."

Far to the north, they visit Iceland, an island that sits on a crack between two of Earth's giant plates.

Grandpa Teo points to clouds of steam rising from the hills.
