Chapter 1The Badlands

The little van rolls into North Dakota. In Theodore Roosevelt National Park, the badlands are striped in red, tan and gray.

Aunt Rosa parks by a lookout. "Before we drive, put your fingers on the home row," she says. "That is where they rest, like a van in its parking spot."

A big bison walks slowly across the road.

Biscuit stays very quiet. The trip to the West has begun.

Chapter 2Faces in the Stone

In South Dakota, Mount Rushmore shows four presidents carved in stone: Washington, Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Lincoln.

Sam looks way up. "Reach up to the top row," says Aunt Rosa, "then come back home."

Sam counts the faces two times. Still four.

Biscuit barks once, very politely.
