Chapter 1Launch Pad

It is launch day. Leo climbs into the rocket Vega with Captain Nova and Pip, a small, friendly robot.

Captain Nova smiles. "Tonight is Star Night at home. Let's bring back a picture of every world for our Space Book."

"First, put your fingers on the home row," she says. "That is where they live, just like we live on Earth."

The engines roar, and the Vega lifts off into the sky.

Earth gets smaller and smaller. It looks blue, because water covers most of it.

Chapter 2The Moon

The Vega lands on the gray Moon. There is almost no air here, so everyone wears a space suit.

Leo wants to climb a crater wall. "Reach up to the top row," says Captain Nova, "then come back home."

Captain Nova points across the dust. "Apollo 11 landed on the Moon in July 1969," she says. "Neil Armstrong took the first steps."

There is no wind on the Moon, so footprints can stay for a very long time.
