Jane Goodall at Gombe

Jane Goodall began studying wild chimpanzees in Tanzania in 1960. She gave the animals names instead of numbers, which was unusual at the time. She watched a chimpanzee strip a twig and fish termites out of a mound. Until then, most scientists believed that only humans made tools. Her field notes covered the same families for decades.

The Erie Canal

The Erie Canal opened in 1825 and ran more than three hundred miles across New York. Mules walked a towpath beside the water and pulled the boats along. A chain of locks raised and lowered the boats over the change in elevation. Freight that once crawled overland by wagon now moved far more cheaply by water. Towns along the route grew quickly once the canal was open.

Reading Tree Rings

A tree usually adds one ring of new wood each growing season. A wide ring points to a wet year, and a narrow ring to a dry one. Researchers take a thin core with a hollow borer instead of cutting the tree down. Matching patterns from many trees stretches the record back centuries. Rings also hold scars from fires and from insect outbreaks.

Mapping the Ocean Floor With Sound

A survey ship sends a pulse of sound down toward the seafloor. The time the echo takes to return shows how deep the water is. Thousands of such readings can be drawn as a map of the bottom. Marie Tharp used these readings to map a long ridge down the Atlantic. The ridge turned out to mark a boundary between plates of the crust.

The Return of the Bald Eagle

Bald eagle numbers fell sharply in the middle of the twentieth century. A pesticide called DDT thinned the eagles' eggshells, so the eggs broke. The United States banned most uses of DDT in 1972. Protected nesting sites gave the surviving pairs a safer place to breed. By 2007 the bald eagle was taken off the endangered species list.

· 40 min

Calentamiento — diga esto

“Exacto quiere decir exacto.

El texto dice the flight plan had been produced by a new electronic machine y que Glenn pidió que Johnson revisara los números a mano.
